The shape of AI-assisted product work

A framework for understanding how AI is reshaping roles, workflows, and the artifacts we create.

AI is not simply making familiar product tasks faster. It is changing the shape of the work: where judgment sits, when teams commit to a direction, and which artifacts are valuable enough to preserve.

The useful question is therefore not “Which tasks can be automated?” It is “Which decisions become easier to examine, and which become easier to avoid?”

Three shifts in the work

The first shift is from producing an artifact to curating a field of possibilities. A designer may generate twenty plausible flows before lunch. The scarce skill becomes recognizing the one that expresses the right product judgment.

The second shift is from handoff to continuous interpretation. Research, design, engineering, and product strategy meet inside shared model-assisted artifacts. Those artifacts can move quickly, but their assumptions must remain visible.

The third shift is from execution quality to question quality. When competent output is cheap, framing becomes the most consequential part of the process.

AI compresses the distance between an idea and an artifact. It does not compress the distance between an artifact and a good decision.

The exact number is not important. What matters is the relationship it makes visible: higher production speed only helps when the review system evolves with it.

A practical response

Teams can adapt by keeping assumptions close to generated artifacts, reviewing options against explicit principles, and reserving time for decisions that cannot be delegated to the model.

This creates a more useful division of labor. The model expands the search space. The team remains responsible for meaning.
